Taking a look back over the past year and looking forward to the coming one.

Christmas will now fade into the rearview mirror and our attention turns to a new year. Do you have hope as you look ahead? The Father of hope is very interested.

How would you describe yourself in mid-December: tired or rested? The God of the Bible who understands the importance of rest prescribes the same for us: He wants to give you rest.

For most of us, The Christmas season is anything but peace. But we want it to be so desperately. God called Jesus the Prince of Peace. What can this mean to us?

The world’s definition of joy is whatever brings a smile to your face and whatever brings you pleasure. According to the Bible, true joy isn’t determined by external circumstances - where you are, what you do, how much money you make, or how many possessions you have. True joy is found in a relationship with Jesus where we appreciate what God has done, is doing, and will do for us.

Wouldn’t it be great to look at your life and have less regrets because of some changes you’ve made during this series?

Everyone desires to leave a lasting imprint in life. Something that outlives them, a legacy to be remembered, that made a difference. Harold Kushner said, “I am convinced that it is not the fear of death, of our lives ending, that haunts our sleep so much as the fear...that as far as the world is concerned, we might as well never have lived.” How will you leave this Earth? Will you leave a legacy for Christ and live a life boldly for Him?

People who face the end of their lives have a remarkable humility. They have to depend on others. They are no longer self-sufficient or proud. Yet in their weakness they have discovered a liberating truth. It is found in 2 Corinthians 12:9. It’s one of those difficult passages where Paul, the writer, is struggling with an issue in his life that he is absolutely powerless over. He asks God to remove it three times. But God says, “‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’ So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” Have you learned to live a life of humility in the midst of your weaknesses?

Christ showed us the most powerful demonstration of love when He went to the cross, and in the cross we find the power to love the people in our lives, and we need God’s power to love completely. We all know it can be a steep climb from where we are to where we actually want to be in our relationships. Whether it’s a business partnership, a friendship, or a marriage, there are three mountains we’ve got climb in order to love the people in our lives.

Death is a certainty; life is an option. Just like a roller coaster, the ride of life is full of ups and downs, twists and turns. It moves at a fast pace; and before we know it, it’s over. Our lives on this earth are temporal and finite. This fact can be discouraging, causing us to miss out on all this life has to offer or it can be liberating, allowing us to take advantage of every moment and every opportunity and reminding us to be all that we were made to be. The question is not will we die one day, but rather are we truly living today?

Looking at old tombstones, you can’t help but recognize that entire lives are now reduced before you to two dates and one little dash. Some monuments include facts or sayings, Bible verses or poignant memorials, but each person’s life really comes down to what transpired between those two dates. It comes down to what’s in the dash. You could look at the dash of a particular person’s marker and wonder, What did he or she live for? Whom did he or she love? What were his or her passions and dreams? What were his or her biggest mistakes and greatest regrets? How will you live your dash?

There is wired within us a great sense of seeing justice done. If it doesn’t come in this lifetime, we figure it will after that. In love God has revealed what we need to know about the future and be prepared for it. We are to live and promote the good news that Jesus brought to this world because we love the people God loves.
