The economy is reopening — now is that a good thing or not?We talk about it on this week's episode of the Access Louisville podcast. Reporters Marty Finley and Haley Cawthon are on the show this week. Finley has been closely following government restrictions and reopening plans in Kentucky and in Indiana. Cawthon has been keeping close tabs on our restaurant businesses, which have suffered a great deal during this crisis. We go over when and how government restrictions are being lifted in each state and what retailers and restaurants think about it.We also chat about how we feel personally about the restrictions being lifted. Will we be the first in line when restaurants finally open their doors? Later in the show, Cawthon tells us how big restaurant chain earnings are looking, specifically those at Yum Brands Inc., Texas Roadhouse Inc. and Papa Johns International Inc. And we give some shoutouts to restaurants that have been crushing the delivery and takeaway game in recent weeks. We also chat about our

There's also talk about bringing back Major League Baseball and NBA basketball for this summer. We talk about the minor league Louisville Bats and it's prospects for a season. As always, we don't just talk about one topic. We also go over Gov. Andy Beshear's plan to reopen many parts of the economy in May (and how restaurants were excluded from that action.)Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. So when can Kentucky's economy reopen? We talk about that on this week's Access Louisville podcast. Reporter Marty Finley, who covers government (among other things) for Business First, talks about the benchmarks that have been set and Gov. Andy Beshear's guiding philosophy on reopening. We already know that some health care facilities are going to reopen as soon as April 27. Statisticians from the University of Washington that have been monitoring the rate of new cases predict a June date relaxing of social distancing guidelines in Kentucky. As always we don't just talk about one topic on this week's show. At the top of the program we discuss pieces of media we've really dived into amid the quarantine. Finley recommends ESPN's new documentary "The Last Dance," while Brooke Timmons has mostly tuned into TikTok and Instagram. Digital Editor David Mann is on a "Gears 5" kick over on Xbox.In the last segment of the show, we talk about a recent cover story in w

  • Plenty of reasons to drink, but it's bad times for brewers

    09/04/2020 Duração: 31min

The coronavirus outbreak has given us plenty of reasons to drink. But that doesn't mean that it has been kind to local breweries. We talk about that on this week's episode of the Access Louisville podcast. Reporter Haley Cawthon recently penned a story on how breweries have been hurt by the outbreak, primarily as a result of restaurants, bars and tap houses being closed to encourage social distancing. Those on premise sales are a huge part of the business that breweries do. Some pivoted to retail sales but that can only offset the loss so much.As always, we discuss a couple of different topics on the show. At the top of the program we talk about how our shopping habits have changed. We also discuss the best advice we've heard from local leaders during the outbreak. And — for a little noncoronavirus news — we talk about Papa John's relationship with Shaquille O'Neil during the last year.Time stamps are below:• How shopping habits changed —1:00• How breweries are handling quarantine — 6:

  • Are Louisville's hospitals ready for coronavirus?

    25/03/2020 Duração: 24min

The new novel coronavirus again dominates our Access Louisville podcast this week. We chat with health care reporter Chris Larson about what is possibly the scariest aspect of this pandemic: Hospital readiness.Larson recently penned a story about how the Louisville area's three largest health care systems are getting ready for the outbreak, which you can read here. On the show he talks about some of the figures from that story including daily hospital census counts. It's a difficult topic but one we feel like we should discuss, considering the strange times in which we're all living. As always, we don't just address one topic, however. We also talk about our plans for after the quarantine ends. And we chat about the different language states are using in this situation. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, for instance, doesn't like the phrase "shelter in place."Design/Multimedia Editor Brooke Timmons, Digital Editor David Mann and Reporter Marty Finley join Larson on this week's

  • Working through the new normal

    19/03/2020 Duração: 33min

Much has changed during the last week or so as the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak has expanded across the U.S.We talk about Kentucky's move to shut down restaurants, bars, movie theaters and other places in order to slow it down. This is obviously taking a huge toll on business with many restaurants having to layoff their entire staff so they could collect unemployment benefits. Restaurant Reporter Haley Cawthon tells us what she's been hearing from restaurateurs and we also talk about a few local relief efforts. After that we talk about the government's response, including national praise for Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear. These are difficult times in Louisville and around the country. • Staying at home is the new going to work

    13/03/2020 Duração: 30min

**AUDIO QUALITY WARNING**Like everything during the second week of March 2020, this week's podcast is a weird one. A panel of Louisville Business First employees talks about working remotely and living through the massive coronavirus effort of 2020.The audio quality isn't all here. Because coronavirus has many people working from home we decided to record online instead of in our usual studio.
