Humans are driven by a deep desire for meaning. We often seek our purpose and identity in our work, pouring our energy into our careers with the hope that it’ll satisfy our deepest longings. Or we move from one relationship to the next, believing that the right person will complete us. Despite living in a world rich with experiences, many of us find ourselves feeling empty and unfulfilled. There must be more to life than this. Why am I here? How can I live a life filled with true meaning and purpose?

We live in a world of never enough. We work more to earn more to buy more, new, or next, believing this is the path to happiness. But the consumer world has consumed us, leaving us tired, dissatisfied, and disillusioned. One of the early church’s irresistible qualities was its extravagant generosity. Tertullian, a 2nd-century North African church father, wrote, “It is our care of the helpless, our practice of loving kindness that brands us in the eyes of our opponents.” How do we break free from the tyranny of never enough? What does it look like to live an extravagantly generous life?

Hurry is our way of life. We rush from one thing to the next. We wear busyness as a badge of honor. All in an effort to be successful, to leave our mark on the world, but rarely do we experience the abundant life that Jesus came to give us. One of the things that is striking when you read the Gospels is how often Jesus withdrew to lonely places to pray. Jesus lived the most impactful life in all of human history, and he had regular rhythms to silence, solitude and prayer that sustained Him. In a world of non-stop, constant noise and distraction we need the life-giving practices of Jesus more now than ever.

The world is desperate for good news. It feels like every day, we are inundated with more and more bad news. Here’s the interesting thing, the word Gospel literally means “good news.” When the first followers shared about Jesus, they were sharing news. N.T. Wright defines news as “something has happened as a result of which the world is a different place.” The first followers saw the risen Jesus, they experienced the power of the Holy Spirit, and their lives were so changed that they couldn’t help but share this news with everyone they met. What’s so good about the Gospel of Jesus? What if the Gospel of Jesus isn’t just good news for some people but good news for every person?
