Things are tough at CheapShow HQ, their rival podcast clone, Thrift Pod, is casting a long shadow over Paul & Eli and they wonder if their beloved economy comedy podcast can survive much longer! In a decision that definitely won’t bite them in the ass later on down the road, they agree to let Richard Brandoff sort the situation out, once and for all. On the off chance he is successful, what will his act of revenge cost the cheap chaps? While they wait for Brandoff to put his plan in action, it’s time to delve into doing what Paul and Eli do best. Whilst Paul and Eli have carried on regardless, there have been nefarious plans developing in the background and its not good news for the “much loved” economy comedy podcast. Following the shocking events of Red Nob Day, Richard Brandoff and Jimmy Biscuits are living in hiding on a busy roundabout. It’s not been much of a Summer this year, so while the sun is shining and while there are plenty of cheap eats to sample, why not go on a picnic? Some weeks on CheapShow, things get a little weirder than usual. This is one of those episodes. This week, Paul and Eli enter into the world of “Miss World” competitions. They’ve been given a board game, from the 1970s, that allows young girls a taste of a glamourous pageantry lifestyle. As they learn more about the world-famous beauty contest, the cheap chaps uncover some quite surprising facts. During gameplay, they’ll travel the world, putting on Vegas shows, auditioning for TV adverts and smuggling diamonds out of South Africa!! Who will win the crown? Whoever wins, we’ll all lose. Before all that, Juicy Jeremy has sent a parcel of pop, with three new, cheap soft drinks to evaluate! What will they make of Inca Cola, which is described as a “champagne cola”? There are plenty of peculiar tunes to soak up this week on CheapShow. The segment may be called Silverman’s Platter, but on this edition of the podcast, Paul’s brought along a few interesting records to listen to. A song based on popular TV show “Minder” and styled after Chas N Dave brings Paul and Eli’s attention to the work of The Firm, a music group that churned out one of the 1980s biggest novelty pop hits. Apparently, they had a whole album, so the cheap chaps take a quick tour of their output. There is also a strange album to listen to that was designed to help raise fund for children’s charity NSPCC in 1984. It’s packed with some obvious and not so obvious celebrities from the period, but we focus on Dennis Waterman’s rock n roll Lollipop song and Felicity Kendall’s moog flavoured ditty about fairies! It’s also time to return to the Country Urban Noodle Test Lab International Cuisine Kitchen with a few instant noodles that are new to Eli’s palate. Some week’s Paul and Eli can afford to take it easy. After the exertions of last week’s epic Golden Quest, it’s probably for the best that they let someone else do the hard work of building an episode. Thankfully, there is a PO Box delivery from listeners Karen and Adam that does all the heavy lifting. Inside (amongst other things) is a carefully curated mix of cheap eats and a pretty solid selection of Price of Shite items. What will they make of the Ketchup crisps, pretzel pieces and Blue Ball Bonbons is anyone’s guess, but the biggest question is who will reign victorious and get the most p’twings in the Price of Shite? The important thing to remember is that despite the open goal they’ve been given, Paul and Eli will find a way to ruin it for themselves. Typical! There are charity shop goodies galore on CheapShow this week when the Showcase rolls back into town. What’s wrong with putting a little happiness into the world? Nothing really, but when its folksy positivity is hiding a veneer of corporate soullessness, it’s hard to really get behind those good, life affirming vibes. Paul and Eli discover this the hard way when they attempt to play the “Chicken Soup For The Soul” board game. Will the game bring out the joy of sharing, friendship and laughter, or will it lead to miserable, bitter arguments? If you’ve heard the podcast before, you’ll probably have a fair idea on where this will go… Although you do get a damned fine story from Eli about his brush with cinema glamour, so it’s not a complete loss. After a few weeks of song contests, real time episodes and walkabout adventures, Paul and Eli are back in the House of Sausage and Eggs for some wholesome and earthy cheap and cheerful segments. They’ve found some proper discount snacks this week, tasting a range of budget bites and fizzy delights. There’s an Irish Monster Munch knock-off to sample, something a little tasty for instant noodleheads, a traditional potato snack with a confounding gimmick and a soft drink from India that is more fascinating than the cheap chaps first think! Sadly, any joy taken from these nibbles will be sapped away in the Silverman’s Platter segment. It unleashes three truly soul crushing audio oddities that range from the saccharine to the outright offensive. Can you survive these vinyl record hellscapes? Paul and Eli are barely able to! The sun is out and Paul and Eli have no intention of recording this week’s episode indoors. Rather than sweat it out in the House of Pickles, Paul recommends a wander around Stanmore Country Park and Eli willingly agrees. After all the drama of Urinevision 2023, a nice relaxing walk in the woods of North London seems like the perfect antidote the cheap chaps desperately need. Over the course of one long, hot Summer’s day, Paul and Eli will tackle cheesy cheap eats, they’ll attempt to value some Transformers themed Price of Shite items, Paul will discover that wearing shorts and traversing nettle bushes don’t mix and Eli will become obsessed with the word “pasturey”. Expect the usual arguments, confusing comedic scenarios and, with a bit of luck, a swing to have an accident on! In Episode 310, all those months ago, Paul and Eli attempted to complete the whole of the Celandine Walk in 6 hours. They absolutely failed and had to abandon the walk because Eli had somewhere better to be, apparently! However, this failure got under their skin, and they decided that they both need closure. This week, the Cheap Chaps decide to finish off what they started and endeavour to complete that walk, taking them from Swakeleys Park to the Grand Union Canal in Cowley. That means there is a good five miles of walking ahead of them! Along the way, they decide to also cram in another modular “Price of Shite” and guess the prices of seven weird and wonderful charity shop finds. Who will win the most “p’twings” by the end of the journey? Why do they keep getting lost? What happens when they run out of places to walk to and who smokes too much and nearly whites out? It’s a particularly volatile episode this week as Paul is in a proper mood and Eli is absolutely not in the mood for it.
