The path out of bitterness is by practicing the habit of forgiveness. When asked, "How many times should I forgive my friend?" Jesus replies, "Seventy times seventy," which is his way of saying that we should freely and fully offer forgiveness endlessly. But how do we do that? That sounds like a nice teaching, but when we have been grievously hurt, it sounds impossible and even unjust. How can we forgive the people while also acknowledging the pain they have caused us?

Bitterness is strange: when it infects our life, we are usually the last ones to know it. We go through our life thinking things are fine, that we’ve “gotten over” certain losses, but the way other people experience us is different: they can see the hurt we carry. “The heart knows its own bitterness,” says Proverbs 14:10, “and no stranger shares its joy.” It remains one of the more under-diagnosed sins that can destroy our life. What is bitterness? What healing resources might be hidden in the gospel of Jesus Christ?

At Awakening Church, our vision is to be a strategic training center raising up the next generation of world changers.
