Every single person longs to be loved deeply, to know and be known intimately.  In our culture, we often confuse sex for love and separate God from the equation and yet the deep longing for intimacy persists. Could there be an intrinsic connection between love, sex, and God that we have missed? How are followers of Jesus to go about relationships in a sexually confusing world? What’s amazing is 2,000 years ago the Apostle Paul wrote something so incredibly profound and applicable to us when it comes to our sexuality, you would think he is writing today.  Join us as we close out our series BAD ADVICE.

The one thing it seems like we can all agree on is if we could just love each other the world would be a better place. The problem is we just can’t seem to agree on what we mean by the word love.  And even when we do agree it doesn’t seem  to make the world a better place or at very least our world.   What does it mean to truly love someone, whether it’s a friend, a coworker or a spouse?  And what does it look like when someone truly loves you? What if love isn’t the problem but it’s our definition of  love that is the problem?

When friends let us down or a relationship does not go the way we thought it would, it’s easy for us to think we’re missing out on something else: another friend, another spouse, another life circumstance that would help us. If only we were richer, lived somewhere else, had more time, had a different friend or spouse…but is the grass really greener on the other side? If we exchanged the relationships we currently have for other ones or for other circumstances, would our lives actually improve? Scripture invites us to a life of contentment, one that fully trusts that the Lord has assigned to us a particular kind of life with particular people. How would the practices of commitment, contentment, and gratitude shape our relationships for the better? Join us for week 3 of “Bad Advice.”

At the very heart  of the American Dream are the unalienable rights of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”  Today, we say it this way, “You deserve to be happy.” “If it doesn’t make you happy let it go” “The purpose of life is to be happy.”  “As long as you are happy, that’s all that matters.”  Is your personal happiness really the only thing that matters?  What if the pursuit of happiness is actually the thing that is undermining the flourishing of your relationships?

There is an ocean of advice for relationships online and in our social circles...how do we wade through it all? Advice is easy to come by today, but sorting through good advice and bad advice seems almost impossible.  What if the advice you’ve embraced is actually ruining the relationships that matter most to you?  And how do we discern the good advice from the bad?  Join us for a new series called Bad Advice, as we unpack some of the most pervasive ideas that are undermining the flourishing of our relationships.

In Jesus’s story, a Pharisee and a tax collector go to the temple to pray. The Pharisee thanks God that he isn’t a sinner like the tax collector. The tax collector is so full of shame that he wouldn’t look to the heavens. He prays for God to have mercy on him. Jesus says that it’s the tax collector who went home justified because of his humility.

The calling card of a follower of Jesus is to be how we love people. In fact, Jesus said the quality and character of our love would reveal to the world that we are his disciples. In a world that desperately longing for love and mercy, how do we become a people who love others the way Jesus loved us?

“When Jesus returns there will be ultimate justice, until then it’s just us.” In the new year, we love to make new plans, embrace new dreams, set new goals.  But have you ever stopped to wonder what God desires for you in 2022? Or what does God desire for His church?  Before you finalize your 2022 plans listen to what God says He requires of us: “He has shown you…what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." [ Micah 6:8]. Join us for a powerful New Year series and discover how 2022 can be the most fulfilling, impactful, purposeful year of your life.

When it comes to the Christmas story we are so familiar with it we no longer see the wonder in it. We even set up nativity scenes in our homes, or see them in people’s yards but miss the wonder, the power, the overwhelming majesty of this moment. A.W. Tozer once wrote, “It does seem strange that so many persons become excited about Christmas and so few stop to inquire into its meaning; but I suppose this odd phenomenon is quite in harmony with our unfortunate human habit of magnifying trivialities and ignoring matters of greatest import.” What if this moment is a matter of greatest importance?

In the midst of the Christmas hustle of buying gifts, decorating the tree, and holiday parties, it can be easy to be distracted from what God is doing in our lives. As we look at the Christmas story, we see Mary, a young girl chosen to bring the Messiah into the world. Mary could have been caught up in her complicated and less than ideal circumstances, but instead she was more focused on what God was doing. Through the story of Mary, we will discover how God invites us to soak in the wonder of His faithfulness.

Joseph is often overlooked in the Christmas story. Maybe it’s because we have no recorded words of Joseph. Maybe it’s because Mary did the heavy lifting of giving birth. Or maybe it’s because Joseph appears to have died in Jesus’ teenage years and so he’s not a part of the entire life story of Jesus like his mother Mary. Whatever the reason, in overlooking Joseph we have overlooked a powerful and profound part of the Christmas story.

We miss the significance of the opening sentence of the Christmas Story if we pass the name Augustus Caesar.  He was the most powerful, influential, wealthy man in the world.  Now he is merely a footnote for a poor, refuge, blue collar worker turned rabbi from an obscure part of the Roman Empire, who was eventually executed on a Roman cross.  When we compare these two men, we can’t help but wonder afresh who was this Jesus?

As Christ-followers, giving thanks to God shouldn't just be something we consider during a holiday like Thanksgiving. What about when we're going through the dark valleys of life? Could there be a blessing in the spiritual formation that comes as we develop a daily posture of thanksgiving? This isn't your typical Thanksgiving sermon. Money is a spiritual thing. What we do with our money has an effect on our souls. We have said through this series that the best spiritual practice is to give 10% and save/invest 10% of the money we make—and so what does the rest of the 80% look like? Is what we do with this 80% important or is it ours to do with it whatever we please? The key to living life on the 80% involves several mindset changes and lifestyle changes that will lead to our flourishing and joy. The question becomes: will we adopt these commands of Jesus into our life or simply listen to them? Jesus offers us a joyful life as we learn to live on 80% of our earnings.
