The New Testament paints a picture of the church that may look very different from your picture of the church. Many of us see our pastors as “religious professionals” who do the work of the ministry for us. They preach, lead, and do works of service for the community. But the New Testament shows us a different image: an image of every believer doing the work of the ministry, partnering together by using their different gifts in order to “build up” the church in love.

One of the most common knee-jerk reactions to hearing the word “evangelism” is fear, timidity, and most often believing that “it’s just not my gift.” But what does Jesus actually teach us about evangelism and the call on Christ followers to spread the Good News? Within the church, there are varieties of gifts. Some of them, like hospitality or service, look familiar to those on the outside of the faith. And yet others are strange: prophecy, tongues, healing—what do these words mean? And how can we practice these gifts in the modern church? Grace is deeper and more wonderful than you could ever imagine. You are saved by grace and invited to a life empowered by grace. But does this mean we do nothing? How do you experience the empowering grace of God in your life?

When Paul, an early follower of Jesus, was suffering and hurting, he heard Jesus say to him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). This profound statement helps us understand that the most important thing we can do during hard times is remember God’s grace. How can we make a habit of bringing God’s grace into our lives? Join us for the next three weeks as we learn the habit of grace.

At the end of Jesus’ message, the gospel writer Matthew records the response from his listeners: “the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.” What did Jesus say that brought the crowds to this point? How did he conclude his message? What are his final admonitions? Through two powerful pictures, Jesus will show us just how essential it is for us to not just know the teachings, but to obey them in partnership with him, our master teacher. We will see that the sermon isn’t over — nor is it correctly interpreted until it is practiced in partnership with Jesus himself. Join us as we close out our seven month journey through the Sermon on the Mount!

Along the narrow road, Jesus warns us of the voices we will hear along the way. “False prophets,” he calls them—those who beckon us off the path, work to divert our discipleship. Jesus teaches they will be difficult to recognize: people are not all that they seem. We need the help of Jesus to be able to discern the voices in our lives and how they either help or hinder our walk of faith. Join us along the road less traveled.
