After the birth of Jesus, we are told, Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. Why was she treasuring these things in her heart? Obviously, she was treasuring the moments of being a new mother, but on a deeper level, she understood something to be true of her son: that he was the gift that would bring salvation to the whole world. Through Mary’s story, we see what love is and how we can receive God’s love: through treasuring him as a gift to us and for us.
