Where do we stand as a society on actual scientific research on sexuality? There are three key moments in history that mark genuine milestones in the scientific research of sexuality. First was in 1947, when Alfred Kinsey founded the institute for Sex Research at Indiana University provoking controversy at the time. He is best known for the Kinsey scale which rates ones sexual orientation. The second was in 1957, when William Masters and Virginia Johnson pioneered research into the nature of human sexual response and diagnosis and treatment of sexual disorders and dysfunctions. They recorded some of the first laboratory data on the anatomy and physiology of human sexual response based on direct observation of 382 women and 312 men in what is estimated to be "10,000 complete cycles of sexual response". Their findings on the nature of female sexual arousal and orgasms dispelled many long-standing misconceptions.
