The Once and Future PC Meaning. Forty years ago, two companies arrived on the tech scene: Apple and Microsoft. In 2015, Microsoft readies Windows 10 and struggles for relevance, while Apple is now the most profitable supplier of mobile phones in the world. Both still have huge impacts on the PC, however, with Windows and MacOS.  It's clear the old tower PC of yore no longer claims the prime spot for personal computing. But the PC has exploded into many forms, from fire-breathing gaming rigs to tiny devices barely larger than a USB stick.
