As one of the "New Three Musketeers" alongside Hiroshi Tanahashi and Shinsuke Nakamura, Shibata's wrestling career was no easy path. After leaving New Japan during desperate times in 2005, Shibata returned to the company in 2012, spending years fighting his way to a contract and the respect of his peers, before a serious brain injury after the greatest and most important match of his life in 2017 took him out of action.
