Hey friends! We know this year has been absolutely bonkers, but one of the bright spots of the year has been reading so many amazing stories by so many different talented authors. And while we would absolutely love to include every single book we’ve read this year in our favorites list, we try to whittle the list down to as close to 10 as possible (which is really hard!!!) Even though we try to do only 10, since our lists don’t completely overlap, we do have a little more than that every year. We’ve also included some comics as well (because we have many tastes!) Did somebody ask for queer pirates??? This week we talk all about the high fantasy novel (or as Brendan called it "vintage") The Mermaid The Witch And The Sea by Maggie Tokuda-Hall! The story follows the pirate Flora (also known as Florian) and Evelyn; Evelyn is traveling across the sea to meet her Fiance, and little does she know that the passenger ship she has boarded is actually a pirate ship that doesn't intend on bringing her to her fiance! We meet back up with Danielle Tozer's Dreadnought 9 months after the events of the first book, and it seems like Danielle is starting to get the hang of her powers, and is feeling confident in her role as the sole protector of New Port. But, being the sole protector is starting to wear on Danielle, and it seems like a nefarious new super villain is rearing his ugly head. Hey Friends! This week we read Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender! Felix Ever After follows Felix Love, who understands the irony of never having fallen in love before. He's afraid he's one marginalization too many- Black, Queer and Transgender, to ever get his happy ending. What's worse is when an anonymous student at his school starts sending wildly transphobic messages to him on instagram, after putting up a gallery with Felix's deadname included underneath each photo, stolen from his instagram.
