  • 153: How Eating Disorders Impact the Gut Microbiome

    03/03/2020 Duração: 24min

The purpose of today’s episode is to share the digestive response our bodies have to an eating disorder and how this impacts our gut microbiome.   For the context of this episode, I’m going to refer to eating disorders to include the entire spectrum: chronic dieting, disordered eating, orthorexia, anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating. Since I specialize in orthorexia, I’ll really be touching on this quite a bit in this episode, yet all eating disorders (ED) have an effect so this really is an episode to say all forms of ED impact digestion.   According to Marci Evans, 98% of those affected by ED have digestive issues. Specifically functional gut disorders (meaning no structural damage), although structural disorders can absolutely impact those with ED, too. In today’s episode we share why this may be that so many with ED struggle with digestive issues, as well as why those with digestive issues are more prone to develop ED.   There are so many mechanisms at play for how the digestive process is affected when w

  • 151: Honoring Your Hunger and Fullness Cues

    25/02/2020 Duração: 24min

One of the most common complaints I hear from you is feeling annoyed with your hunger and your body’s cues to eat.   I first encourage you to begin my questioning why you feel that way.   Why is it that we find a body’s signal to us annoying? Desire to question it? Or straight up don’t listen to it?   Diet culture is the culprit. So let’s choose otherwise.   Honoring hunger isn’t “giving in”, it’s body respect! It’s self care! It’s listening to your body and one of the first steps to that mind body connection.   Learn more in this episode about primal hunger, hunger and fullness interoceptive cues, the hunger fullness scale, not turning these principles into a diet and the benefits of honoring your hunger and fullness.   Referenced in this episode:  Episodes on  Intuitive Eating Principles Part 1  and Part 2. • 148: Is It Okay to Meal Plan and Food Prep as an Intuitive Eater?

    11/02/2020 Duração: 21min

There are so many misconceptions about intuitive eating, one of the biggest ones is that it’s anti-health and you cannot care about nutrition, health and wellness. The reasons, however, that health and wellness is pursued as an intuitive eater is very different than the diet culture infused versions of health and wellness.    So can you practice meal planning and food prepping as an intuitive eater?   Absolutely!   Important distinction: make sure you are in a healthy place with it first, though. If you are using it to control your food, it would be important to take a break until you can come back to it in a more fluid, healthy way. Think of it like the exercise conversation, just because we ask at times for exercise breaks, for example pausing on exercise until you get your period back if its missing, that doesn’t mean its a forever thing. Just like exercise too, meal planning and food prepping should enhance your life, bring joy or reduce stress, it shouldn’t be about controlling your body, controlling you
