In this week's DC Beer Show, the Brew Daddies travel to Sterling, Virginia and visit Twinpanzee, a nano-brewery opened in 2017. Twinpanzee runs a two barrel, 65-gallon brew system to produce diverse styles and a complex beer menu. They pride themselves in brewing natural beer without artificial flavors or purees...nothing fake! A great example of this is their delicious Kolsch, made with locally-sourced yeast. We visit Brookeville Beer Farm where head brewer Kenny Borkman talks about being hands-on with the brewing process and walks us through growing their own hops, herbs, spices, and fruits. Brookeville’s focus on creating the best quality beer starts with sourcing local ingredients. The Brew Daddies travel to Sterling, VA to sit down with owner Richard Hartogs and head brewer Russell Carpenter of Rocket Frog Brewing Company. In the short nine months since opening, Rocket Frog has had some amazing success, including a bronze medal at The Great American Beer Festival for their brown ale, Wallops Island. The Brew Daddies learn how Rocket Frog came together and what drove Richard and his twin brother to open it. Russel shares the details of their three vessel, 10-barrel system brewhouse.  The Brew Daddies probe the origins of the brewery's unusual name and why the frog in the logo is blue rather than green. Chesepiooc Real Ale Brewery is a nano brewery in Crofton, Maryland with the mantra “No Flagships”. Since owner/brewer Jon Esposito opened in February, he has brewed close to 130 real ales for his local customers. Adam and Richard sit down with Jon, who started (and sold) his first brewery in the 1990s, to discuss the challenges and thrills of brewing small batch cask ales and experimenting with a variety of flavors. Richard speaks with Kimberly Bender, Executive Director of the Heurich House Museum, about the history of the District's most successful brewer – Christian Heurich.Christian Heurich immigrated from Germany to America in 1866 with $200 in his pocket. He opened his first brewpub in Washington, D.C., in 1872 and became the city's most successful brewer. The Chr. Heurich Brewing Co. was the city’s longest-operating brewery, operating from 1872 to 1956.Kim tells the fascinating stories of how Heurich built a state-of-the-art, fireproof brewing facility on the banks of the Potomac, which stood for nearly 100 years until it was torn down to become the site of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Art, and how he survived Prohibition to re-open for business after most of his contemporaries had died.The Heurich House Museum is a strong supporter of local craft beer and the official home of the DC Brewers Guild.
