Beer is People
18/12/2020 Duração: 45minBeer is people. It’s made, distributed, delivered, sold, and served by people. For our final DC Beer Show of 2020, we wanted to take you, dear listeners, back to that. What better way to do so than to turn the mic over to Jamaal Lemon? Lemon penned “Mutated Anxieties — Living (and Parenting) While Black in the Face of Law Enforcement and COVID-19” for Good Beer Hunting, which won the award for Best Criticism or Commentary from the North American Guild of Beer Writers earlier in the year. Jamaal has been on the podcast before, but we thought his experience as a Black man in America during a time of social upheaval--brought on by both an increased focus on police brutality and a pandemic that has exacerbated inequalities in this country--would be an appropriate way to close out the year. As such, there isn’t much “beer” in this episode. But there is "people". Jamaal talks about his article, about being Black in America in 2020, about why the Black community might distrust a COVID-19 vaccine, and yeah, a little

The Red (On)Lion
22/04/2020 Duração: 12minCAMRA was established in 1971 as a consumer group representing real ale drinkers in the UK. Today, it is a 200,000 member organization advocating for quality ale and promoting pubs as social and cultural hubs.In response to the UK’s closure of all pubs due to COVID-19, CAMRA developed a virtual pub called the Red (On)Lion. People from around the world can sign up to meet people while drinking at home, or a group of friends can reserve a table where they can drink together virtually. The Red (On)Lion also hosts a number of virtual events (including tastings and musical performances). Building Community at Breweries
26/02/2020 Duração: 42minDC Beer’s Richard speaks with guests Lyn Holland of 3 Stars Brewing Company and Bryan Van Den Oever of Red Bear Brewing Company about the concept of breweries and brewpubs as community centers, and patrons enjoy the brewery events that are held. Before prohibition, pubs and salons were popular community meeting places. Since the 1920s, however, most of these establishments lost their “community center” characteristic. But now, things are beginning to change. Over the past several years, breweries and brewpubs around the country (and especially in DC) are again becoming focal points of their communities. Families and groups of all ages are welcome, with breweries holding events from weddings to bingo nights to “plant swaps.”Plant and Yarn Swaps at 3 StarsLast year, Lyn Holland spearheaded a plant swap to bring people together for a few beers and to share their love of plants. She was overwhelmed that the first plant swap brought in more than 80 people. She thought it was a great way for like-minded people in th
